Putting Users in the Driver's Seat

SCDMV Online
“Cyberwoven went above and beyond in not only learning and understanding SCDMV's business model, but also listening to our needs and concerns before making recommendations. Cyberwoven continues to be a partner even after the successful launch of our new site.”
Situation
The SC Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) serves businesses and individuals across the entire state of South Carolina, as well as a growing number of residents from other states. Cyberwoven partnered with SCDMV to design and develop a website that makes it easy for every visitor, no matter their task, to quickly find and access information and, where possible, to complete their transactions online.

Solution
As a result of its many functions, the DMV website has a wide variety of content and services for a broad and diverse user base. However, the content was hard to find and not all that user-friendly. Cyberwoven used a mobile-first strategy to design an approachable, engaging, and modern website, making the site and the DMV's services more efficient for visitors to both navigate and use.
With so much information to sort through, designing a clear, user-focused website architecture with navigational structures was imperative. This user-centric design with both user-based and task-based navigation helps visitors find what they need within three clicks.

Impact
The simplicity of the site means information is the star, so the Cyberwoven team paid special attention to areas where users might become frustrated. The homepage contains several pathways to get into the most popular content on the site.
Since the launch of the new site, visitors can identify the type of vehicle they drive by using a natural-language search bar, or by terms such as “moving to SC” to learn how to register their vehicle. Flyout navigation allows visitors to get anywhere on the site with just one click. Between the focus on simplicity and Cyberwoven's ongoing maintenance, the site looks, feels, and acts as new today as the day it was launched.
After extensive load testing and caching to ensure the site loads reliably fast, even drivers in rural areas have access. The SC Department of Motor Vehicles site offers all services online, meaning fewer visitors and less time waiting in line at one of the DMV's locations.
